Layer 2

Layer 2s are frameworks or protocols built on top of an existing blockchain. Some examples include Polygon, BTC Lightning, ETH Plasma. These frameworks exist “off-chain” and handle some of the computing that is supposed to occur on the underlying blockchain. They essentially reduce the load on the core system. Many different Layer 2s exist and solve scalability in different ways.
